ABOUT THE SPOT
At Ulcinj, Montenegro you’ll find a sandy beach that stretches for miles, the Adriatic sea’s waist shallow water offers endless possibilities for kitesurfing fun.
This spot is a pure kitesurfing paradise. Over the years, Velika Plaza has become one of the most famous and secure places for learning to kitesurf. Counting 12 km from Port Milena to a delta of river Bojana, it’s one of the longest and widest beaches in Europe. The water is usually warm therefor wetsuits are not really needed. Due to a perfect on-shore direction of the wind, beginners don’t have to worry about getting pushed to the open sea and with our rescue boat, we make it absolutely safe for you to enjoy your kitesurfing days. On the delta of river Bojana, which is on 800m from our kite center, the water is flat and really attractive for pro’s to practice tricks, the rest of the cost has choppy water (small waves), fun for jumping and playing around.
The wind season starts from the beginning of May until the end of September. A thermal side-on-shore wind blows almost every day at wind speeds of 15 to 20 knots. Due to its thermal nature, it forms at about 13 pm and it blows till 19 pm. On no-wind days the sea is mirror flat which makes it just perfect for standup paddling but if you’re ready for some adrenaline we have a jet boat so get ready for some wakeboarding fun.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is kitesurfing?
Kitesurfing is a new exciting water sport for the new millennium. The population of kitesurfers has been growing rapidly to around 150,000 to 200,000 kitesurfers world wide by the end of 2006. The idea behind kitesurfing is very simple. A kitesurfer stands on a board with foot straps and uses the power of a large controllable kite to propel him across the water. This makes kitesurfing challenging but fun. Your body is the only connection between the kite and the board and you have to control them both at the same time: piloting the kite on the sky and steering the board on the water.
Is kitesurfing safe?
There have been a few known fatal accidents so for kitesurfing or any other disciplines of power kiting, safety has to be taken seriously. Fortunately, this spot is one of the safest places to learn to do it, due to its wide sandy beach, shadow waters and no dangerous obstacles around.
How hard is it to learn how to kitesurf?
Learning how to kitesurf is actually easier and takes less time than learning how to windsurf. However, the learning curve is much steeper. For example, one of the kitesurfing moves you’ll need to learn is water starting, which is a rather advanced technique than in windsurfing.
Why kitesurf?
How does a kitesurfer control the kite?
A kitesurfer controls the power of the kite using the bar and the trim line (chicken loop line) to change the kite’s drag force. Steering of the kite is similar to turning left and right on a bicycle.
What is a safety release system?
A safety release system is a system that allows the kitesurfer to disable the kite anytime. Inflatable kites have the best safety systems. By simply letting go of the bar kite is fully depowered. For whatever reason, the kite is not completely depowered, the kitesurfer can activate the main safety system to completely disable the kite.
Can I use my wakeboarding or snowboarding skills?
Yes. Controlling a kiteboard is very much like controlling a wakeboard, snowboard or a mono-water-ski. These skills may help you when learning the water start but are not strictly requested.
Can I teach myself or learn from a friend that kites?
Do I need to be really strong to kitesurf?
How much wind do I need to go kiteboarding?
The more the better but generally speaking, the average kiteboarder needs about 12 knots of wind to get up and ride. Lighter riders can stay upwind and ride in less wind, while heavier riders may need 15 knots.
What is the average wind speed here at this spot in Montenegro?
Here, average wind speeds are between 15 and 20 knots (1 knot = 1,852 km/h). Therefore, most common kite sizes used are from 9 to 12 squire meters.
